Bioinformatics

Research in biology and life sciences has advanced rapidly in recent years due to a remarkable progress in molecular biology techniques and information technology. Genome research and gene function studies, in particular, have been performed in a wide range of organisms, from microorganisms to humans, and a vast amount of DNA and protein information have been registered in public databases. The time has come to make use of this information for the promotion of research. To this end, a certain amount of basic technical knowledge is required.

In this lecture, students will be introduced to basic knowledge and techniques related to bioinformatics. This lecture aims to equip students with knowledge on genome analysis techniques, databases, DNA-sequence search techniques, etc., as well as with pragmatical skills through practical training using computers.
